Merucry has an extremely thin atmosphere because the gas particles would move so fast that they escape Mercury's gravity into space.  In Mercury's atmosphere consists of the following gases : Potassium, Sodium, Oxygen, Argon, Helium, Nitrogen, and Carbon Dioxide.  During the day, it has a temperature of about 430 degrees Celcius. However, at night, because of its thin atmosphere the heat flees into space, causing the temperature drops to -170 degrees Celcius.  This results in Mercury having the greatest range of temperatures then any other planet in our solar system.
