In Roman Mythology Mercury is known as the god of commerce, travel, and theivery, who is known as the Greek God Hermes, the messenger of God.  The planet mostlikely given this name because it moves very rapidly across the sky.  It was also given the name, Apollo, for its vision as a morning star and Hermes as an evening star.  Mercury is one of the historic planets and has been well known for more than 1,000 years.
